Hue is about 10 hours south of Ninh Binh, not a great journey over night - oh i should mention travelling in Vietnam. We were going to travel by train, but we ended up buying this Open Tour bus ticket for backpackers which cost $26 US and gets us from Hanoi to Saigon (1700kms) with stops at all the main bits on the way down - bargain! The same journey by train (without the stops) was $75 and flying is about $100 (we'll fly back to hanoi from saigon tho).
So we arrive in Hue knackered, but unable to sleep we decided to check out the Ancient Citadel which is the main site in Hue. Firstly we get a boat across the river separating the citadel from the city, that was ok, cost loads and we got dropped off in a local market which stunk! it was filthy and i tried not to look at the various 'meat' products on offer or wonder about hygene and stuff.
Then we got a cyclo (err a bike with a wagon on front, with a dude that pedals for you) and he toured us around the citadel, it was ok but didnt see much - although there were loads of bullet holes in walls as Hue was the site of one of the fiercest battles in the American war (over here its called that rather than the 'vietnam war' for obvious reasons).
We eventually got in the citadel and its a massive fortress thing with loads of temples and things inside, its quite pretty but a little dissappointing as we had seen Anchor Wat in cambodia.
We left Hue the next day
