I am a Researcher for the BBC Natural History Unit, based in Bristol, UK. I have been working here for six years, and am about to embark upon the most exciting trip imaginable! Wildlife cameraman Stephen De Vere and I are being sent to the Antarctic Peninsular to live on a tiny island for several weeks to film the breeding behaviour of Chinstrap penguins.
The sequence will form part of an exciting new BBC series called 'Life'. Each of the ten programmes will show new and unique behaviours from throughout the animal kingdom, filmed in high definition. Chinstraps are small penguins that choose to nest on islands in Antarctica where the snow has melted to reveal bare rock. The birds make small nests out of stones and try to bring up one or two chicks in cold, windy conditions. In order to film these little birds as they tend to their chicks, we will also have to endure temperatures below freezing with high winds, sleet and snow. Fortunately we don't have to go swimming!
To get there, we need to fly with the RAF to the Falkland Islands, and from there it is a tough 5 days sail across Drake's passage to reach Deception Island. Stephen and I will then be dropped on the beach by the penguin rookery with tents, generators, fuel, food and all of our camera equipment and left for over 3 weeks to film the activity of the birds.
Although we leave the UK today, it will be about a week before we are set up on the Island. Right now the idea of being in a tent surrounded by thousands of penguins seems a million miles away. In fact, it is only about 8309 miles!
