Agra
India
March 2005

Agra. Another busy Indian city, but with the jewel of the Taj Mahal nestling in its midst. travelling from Jaipur we made a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, which is a fortified ghost city built by Emperor Akbar and the capital of The Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585. It was abandoned, and remained deserted ever since.
On arrival at Agra we visited Agra Fort, on the banks of the river. Its a huge complex of palaces and mosques, set in gardens, mostly dating from the 1600s. Then to our hotel for a rest before an early start to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise. I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but in fact it was an awesome experience, difficult to put into words.
