Amritsar - famous especially for The Golden Temple, the headquaters of the Sikh religion. The town itself, is nothing special, and our hotel The Mohan International, despite being listed as Amritsars top hotel, was rather down at heel. We ventured out in the evening and had a rather good tandoori chicken in one of the local restaurants. No beer though.
In the morning we visited the park where 2000 Indians were massacred by the British in 1919. Impossible not to be moved by this atrocity.
Afterwards we went to the Golden Temple, and despit knowing next to nothing about the Sikh religion found it to be a wonderful experience. Its beautiful, and the people were friendly and welcoming.

Note the neat headwear.

Getting lunch for the thousands..

Volunteers helping prepare the food.

Huge numbers of meals are prepared
at the temple for the needy, and this generates a lot of washing up!

The Golden Temple
is set in the middle of a lake, regarded as holy.

The entrance to the Golden Temple

Heads must be covered.
This is our guide, having borrowed a rather splendid head scarf.

Outside the entrance to the Golden Temple.

The everlasting flame memorial.

Marks made by the bullets

Commemorative tablet
in Jallanwala Bagh, site of the massacre.
