Shimla
Shimla
India
March 2005
3 days
Shimla was developed by the British as a summer capital for the raj. It is in the hills and the entire government moved there from Delhi during the hot summer months. It is a strange mixture of old-fashioned British architecture and Indian styles. It is a popular place for Indians to come on holiday, as presumably it seems rather exotic to them. A bit like us going to Southall!
We stayed at a fabulous old fashioned Hotel, and were upgraded to the Royal suite. It was astonishing - I counted 24 chairs alone in our suite, most of them armchairs, and the bed was nine feet wide. We had our own butler/bearer who kept popping up when least expected. As we had so much space we hosted a cocktail party for the others of the group.
Had a lovely time wandering around Shimla - the main street is pedestianised which is unusual for India.

Lots of people...

Seen from the Indian part of town, looking completely out of place.

The Viceroys Palace
Bizarre to think that from here the British ruled all of India, Pakistan & Bangladesh.

A view of our Hotel
The octagonal tower is our lounge. The bedroom and other rooms occupied the building behind the tower.

Ready to take afternoon tea.
