COROMANDEL
The Coromandel Peninsula has fantastic beaches and is thus a holiday destination for New Zealanders. We entered the region on the pacific rim route via the Colonial town of Thames.

We stopped at an old Gold mine and took the underground tour. Was good to creep around in the deep and narrow tunnels but the work carried out here years ago sounded horrendous. Sarah panned for gold and came out with two of the tiniest flakes you can ever imagine…not going to get rich quick that way!

In the afternoon we took the two-hour walk down to Cathedral cove to admire the giant limestone caves. After that we just made it to the Coromandel beach called hot water beach due to it being situated on top of some very active volcanic activity. We arrived just as it got dark but the beach was still packed with people sitting in there little man made sand baths they had dug out. Some were having a right good old time of it drinking Champagne as they soaked up the hot water from below. We merely dipped our toes in some of them and no word of a lie, we almost burnt our feet at one point. It was borderline scalding temperatures but once mixed with the sea water that was washing in, you created a nice warm bath. It’s an unbelievable natural phenomenon.
