ROTORUA

On the way here we zipped across country just to see some glow-worm caves. This was a great little tour down deep in to the earth to see some fabulous cave systems and rock formations. Stalactites and Stalagmites everywhere and one cave is said to have near perfect acoustics and is used for performances by a local choir on occasion. Once in the belly of the lowest cave we boarded a small boat that sailed us along the under ground lake and in such darkness gave us a perfect view of the thousands of glow-worms that hung from the ceiling. It was like looking up at the night sky! These worms hang down and use their illuminous excrement to attract and catch insects in a tiny web.

Once above ground we shot back across to Rotorua, the home of the geysers. A hive of volcanic activity and there was no mistaking the eggy sulphur smell as you arrived in town. Here we visited a nature park to see bubbling mud pools, spouting geysers and a Maori show. This gave us a great insight in to the ancient Maori culture. They sang and danced but the scariest part was the warrior tribal war dance where they star at you with bulging eyes and wag their tong wildly. These are big guys and you’ll have seen this when watching the All Blacks rugby team. Its an intimidation technique and it sure works.
